Abstract: Given a monodromy datum for abelian covers of and a prime of good reduction, there is a natural lower bound for the Ekedahl-Oort type, and the Newton polygon, at of the curves in the family. In this paper, we investigate whether such a lower bound is sharp. In particular, we prove sharpeness when the number of branching points is at most five and sufficiently large. Our result is a generalization of [1, Theorem 6.1] by Bouw, which proves the analogous statement for the -rank, and it relies on the notion of Hasse-Witt triple introduced in [2] by Moonen.
