Abstract: In this paper, we classify the conjugacy classes of widetildemathrmSL2(mathbbR), the universal covering group of mathrmPSL2(mathbbR). For any non-central element alphainwidetildemathrmSL2(mathbbR), we show that its conjugacy class may be determined by three invariants: (i) Trace: the trace (valued in the set of positive real numbers mathbbR+) of its image overlinealpha in mathrmPSL2(mathbbR); (ii) Direction type: the sign behavior of the induced self-homeomorphism of mathbbR determined by the lifting widetildemathrmSL2(mathbbR)curvearrowrightmathbbR of the action mathrmPSL2(mathbbR)curvearrowrightmathbbS1; (iii) Lengthsharp: a conjugacy invariant version of the length function in S. Zhang [DOI:10.1090/amsip/020/13], introduced by S. Mochizuki [DOI:10.1186/s40687-016-0057-x].
