On a Sharp Estimate of Overlapping Schwarz Methods in \mathrm{H}(\mathrm{curl};\Omega) and \mathrm{H}(\mathrm{div};\Omega)

Abstract: The previous proved-bound is

C (1 + f r a c H^{2} d e l t a^{2})

for the condition number of the overlapping domain decomposition

m a t h r m H (m a t h r m c u r l; O m e g a)

and

m a t h r m H (m a t h r m d i v; O m e g a)

methods, where

H

and

d e l t a

are the sizes of subdomains and overlaps respectively. But all numerical results indicate that the best bound is

C (1 + f r a c H d e l t a)

. In this work, we solve this long-standing open problem by proving that

C (1 + f r a c H d e l t a)

is indeed the best bound.
