Abstract: The classification of the maximal subgroups of the Monster mathbfM is a long-standing unsolved problem in finite group theory. According to the existing literature, the classification is complete apart from the question of whether mathbfM contains maximal subgroups isomorphic to mathrmPSL2(13) or mathrmPGL2(13). We answer this question, and thereby complete the classification of the maximal subgroups of mathbfM, by proving that mathbfM contains a unique conjugacy class of maximal subgroups isomorphic to mathrmPGL2(13), and no maximal subgroup isomorphic to mathrmPSL2(13). Our proof is supported by reproducible computations carried out using the publicly available Python package mmgroup for computing with mathbfM recently developed by M. Seysen. We provide explicit generators for our new maximal subgroup mathrmPGL2(13), and accompanying Python code that can be used to verify our result.
