Abstract: The classification of the maximal subgroups of the Monster is a long-standing unsolved problem in finite group theory. According to the existing literature, the classification is complete apart from the question of whether contains maximal subgroups isomorphic to or . We answer this question, and thereby complete the classification of the maximal subgroups of , by proving that contains a unique conjugacy class of maximal subgroups isomorphic to , and no maximal subgroup isomorphic to . Our proof is supported by reproducible computations carried out using the publicly available Python package mmgroup for computing with recently developed by M. Seysen. We provide explicit generators for our new maximal subgroup , and accompanying Python code that can be used to verify our result.
