Abstract: We characterise extremal metrics for the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian with Neumann boundary condition on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary as being induced by minimal immersions into round spheres by first eigenfunctions. On the other hand, we show there are no extremal metrics for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian assuming Dirichlet boundary condition.
