Abstract: We introduce the decomposability spectrum KD=lambdageqomega|Dextislambdaextdecomposable of an ultrafilter D, and show that Shelah's pcf theory influences the possible values KD can take. For example, we show that if aaa is a set of regular cardinals, muinpcfa, the ultrafilter D is |aaa|+-complete and KDsubseteqaaa, then muinKD. As a consequence, we show that if lambda is singular and for some lambda<lambda KD contains all regular cardinals in [lambda, lambda) then: (a) if cflambda=omega then either lambdainKD, or lambda+inKD; and (b) if D is (cflambda)+-complete then lambda+inKD, and pp(lambda)=lambda+.
