On the L-polynomials of curves over finite fields

Abstract: Fix a finite field $mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic and an integer $ggeq1$. We prove that the $mathbbQ$-vector space spanned by the $L$-polynomials of curves of genus $g$ over $mathbb{F}_q$ has dimension $g+1$.
