Abstract: We obtain shape derivative formulae for the first eigenvalue of the Robin -Laplace operator. Using this formula, we prove that in the case of a ball, the domain derivative is negative for certain volume increasing perturbations. An analogous result for certain volume decreasing perturbations is also proved. The existing results on domain monotonicity of the first eigenvalue of the Robin -Laplace operator, even when , involve some convexity constraints on at least one of the domains. The results in this paper indicate that these constraints may be relaxed when the Robin boundary parameter is large.
