Abstract: We prove the connected sum formula for several versions of knot Floer homology defined using direct limits. Our argument uses only certain formal properties of sutured Floer theories, and in particular holds for instanton knot Floer homology, where it was previously unknown. Along the way, we prove several folklore results about the Honda-Kazez-Mati'{c} gluing map in Heegaard Floer homology. As an application of our argument, we deduce the oriented skein exact triangle for the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology. As another application, we obtain a model of the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology which is a finitely generated, free chain complex, and does not involve a direct limit.
