Abstract: We consider the propagation of the acoustic wave in a periodic medium containing small cavities of arbitrary shape with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The rigorous approach reveals that there are exceptional wave vectors for which Bloch waves are a set of clusters of perturbed plane waves propagating in different directions. The leading terms of Bloch waves, their dispersion relations, and the cutoff frequencies are determined. It is shown that for those exceptional wave vectors, no Bloch waves are propagating in one particular direction.
