Abstract: Let mathcalM be a W*-algebra and let LS(mathcalM) be the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with mathcalM. It is shown that for any self-adjoint element ainLS(mathcalM) there exists a self-adjoint element c0 from the center of LS(mathcalM), such that for any epsilon>0 there exists a unitary element uepsilon from mathcalM, satisfying |[a,uepsilon]|geq(1βˆ’epsilon)|aβˆ’c0|. A corollary of this result is that for any derivation delta on mathcalM with the range in a (not necessarily norm-closed) ideal IsubseteqmathcalM, the derivation delta is inner, that is delta(cdot)=deltaa(cdot)=[a,cdot], and ainI. Similar results are also obtained for inner derivations on LS(mathcalM).
