Automorphic forms for subgroups of the modular group
Die Theorie der Thetafunktionen und die Verwendung der Thetanullwerte als spezielle Modulfunktionen hat eine lange Geschichte. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, daß die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten selbst im Sonderfall einer Variablen noch nicht erschöpft sind. Die Autoren entwickeln eine Theorie rationaler Thetacharakteristiken mit Primzahlnenner \(k\). Die charakteristischen Klassen (Charakteristiken mod einer passenden Kongruenz) verknüpfen sie mit den Spitzen der Hauptkongruenzuntergruppe \(\Gamma(k)\) der Modulgruppe \(\Gamma= PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\). Die Modulgruppe \(\Gamma\) operiert hierbei gleichermaßen auf den charakteristischen Klassen und auf den Spitzen. Man erhält damit eine Darstellung von \(\Gamma/ \Gamma(N)\) als Gruppe von Permutationen. Den Zusammenhang zwischen Spitzen und charakteristischen Klassen benutzen die Autoren, um Identitäten zwischen den Thetanullwerten herzuleiten und uniformisierende Funktionen zu konstruieren. Ein Beispiel ist die bekannte \(\lambda\)-Funktion im Fall \(k=2\). Ein besonders interessantes Ergebnis ist die explizite Konstruktionen eines Analogons dieser Funktionen für \(k=3\). Inzwischen hat der erste der beiden Autoren zusammen mit \textit{Y. Kopeliovich} weitere Thetaidentitäten veröffentlicht [Isr. J. Math. 82, 133-140 (1993; Zbl 0786.11022)].
