A finiteness criterion for compact varieties of surjective holomorphic mappings

The main result is the following: Let Y be a compact hyperbolic Kähler manifold. Let X be a compact complex space. Then the set of surjective holomorphic mappings from X to Y is finite. This answers a question of S. Lang in a special case.
