The author gives another simple proof [see also \textit{M. F. Smiley}, Real Hilbert algebras with identity Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 16, 440-441 (1965; Zbl 0161.109)] that a complex Hilbert algebra is isomorphic to the field of complex numbers.
