Abstract: Let the ring of -by- matrices with integral entries, and . This paper studies the set of pairs generating as a ring. We use several presentations of with generators and to obtain the following consequences. egin{enumerate} item Let . Then the rings and , where are pairwise relatively prime, have presentations with 2 generators and finitely many relations. item Let be a commutative domain of sufficiently large characteristic over which every finitely generated projective module is free. We use 4 relations for and to describe all representations of the ring into for . item We obtain information about the asymptotic density of in over different fields, and over the integers. end{enumerate}
