Abstract: We consider compact Hankel operators realized in ell2(mathbbZ+) as infinite matrices Gamma with matrix elements h(j+k). Roughly speaking, we show that, for all alpha>0, the singular values sn of Gamma satisfy the bound sn=O(nalpha) as noinfty provided h(j)=O(j1(logj)alpha) as joinfty. These estimates on sn are sharp in the power scale of alpha. Similar results are obtained for Hankel operators mathbfGamma realized in L2(mathbbR+) as integral operators with kernels mathbfh(t+s). In this case the estimates of singular values of mathbfGamma are determined by the behavior of mathbfh(t) as to0 and as toinfty.
