Abstract: Let Omega be a domain in mathbfRd and h(varphi)=sumk,l=1d(partialkvarphi,cklpartiallvarphi) a quadratic form on L2(Omega) with domain Ccinfty(Omega) where the ckl are real symmetric Linfty(Omega)-functions with C(x)=(ckl(x))>0 for almost all xinOmega. Further assume there are a,delta>0 such that a1dGammadelta,IleClea,dGammadelta,I for dGammale1 where dGamma is the Euclidean distance to the boundary Gamma of Omega. We assume that Gamma is Ahlfors s-regular and if s, the Hausdorff dimension of Gamma, is larger or equal to d1 we also assume a mild uniformity property for Omega in the neighbourhood of one zinGamma. Then we establish that h is Markov unique, i.e. it has a unique Dirichlet form extension, if and only if deltage1+(s(d1)). The result applies to forms on Lipschitz domains or on a wide class of domains with Gamma a self-similar fractal. In particular it applies to the interior or exterior of the von Koch snowflake curve in mathbfR2 or the complement of a uniformly disconnected set in mathbfRd.
