Abstract: Let X1,...,Xn be independent with zero means, finite variances sigma12,...,sigman2 and finite absolute third moments. Let Fn be the distribution function of (X1+...+Xn)/sigma, where sigma2=sumi=1nsigmai2, and Phi that of the standard normal. The L1-distance between Fn and Phi then satisfies [Vert F_n-PhiVert_1lefrac{1}{sigma^3}sum_{i=1}^nE|X_i|^3.] In particular, when X1,...,Xn are identically distributed with variance sigma2, we have [Vert F_n-PhiVert_1lefrac{E|X_1|^3}{sigma^3sqrt{n}}qquad for all ninmathbbN,] corresponding to an L1-Berry--Esseen constant of 1.
