Abstract: In this paper, we investigate minimizing properties of the map x/|x| from the Euclidean unit ball mathbfBn to its boundary mathbbSn1, for the weighted energy functionals Ep,alphan(u)=intmathbfBn|x|alpha|ablau|pdx. We establish the following induction principle: if the map fracx|x|:mathbfBn+1omathbbSn minimizes Ep,alphan+1 among the maps u:mathbfBn+1omathbbSn satisfying u(x)=x on mathbbSn, then the map fracy|y|:mathbfBnomathbbSn1 minimizes Ep,alpha+1n among the maps v:mathbfBnomathbbSn1 satisfying v(y)=y on mathbbSn1. This result enables us to enlarge the range of values of p and alpha for which x/|x| minimizes Ep,alphan.
