Radiation interception equation

From MaRDI portal

Description

This equation estimates the amount of photosynthetically active radiation intercepted by a crop canopy using Beer’s law. Incoming solar radiation is converted to photosynthetically active radiation by applying a fixed fraction. The fraction of radiation intercepted by the canopy is modeled as an exponential function of leaf area index. The extinction coefficient represents average light attenuation within the canopy. This formulation links canopy structure directly to available energy for potential biomass production.

Formula(s) and Quantities
PARi=CconvRAi(1−e−ϵLAI)i
PAR represents intercepted photosynthetically active radiation
RA represents solar radiation
LAI represents leaf area index
ϵ represents canopy light attenuation coefficient
Cconv represents photosynthetically active solar radiation fraction
