Rank of a co-doubly commuting submodule is 2

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We prove that the rank of a non-trivial co-doubly commuting submodule is 2. More precisely, let varphi, psiinHinfty(mathbbD) be two inner functions. If mathcalQvarphi=H2(mathbbD)/varphiH2(mathbbD) and mathcalQpsi=H2(mathbbD)/psiH2(mathbbD), then [ mbox{rank~}(mathcal{Q}_{varphi} otimes mathcal{Q}_{psi})^perp = 2. ] An immediate consequence is the following: Let mathcalS be a co-doubly commuting submodule of H2(mathbbD2). Then mboxrankmathcalS=1 if and only if mathcalS=PhiH2(mathbbD2) for some one variable inner function PhiinHinfty(mathbbD2). This answers a question posed by R. G. Douglas and R. Yang.
