Reflection centralizers in Coxeter groups.

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We refine Brink's theorem, that the non-reflection part of a reflection centralizer in a Coxeter group W is a free group. We give an explicit set of generators for centralizer, which is finitely generated when W is. And we give a method for computing the Coxeter diagram for its reflection subgroup. In many cases, our method allows one to compute centralizers in one's head.

\textit{B. Brink} proved an elegant theorem showing that the centralizer of a reflection \(r\) in a Coxeter group \(W\) is the semidirect product of a Coxeter group by a free group [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 28, No. 5, 465-470 (1996; Zbl 0852.20033)]. She also showed that the free group in the decomposition is isomorphic to the fundamental group based at \(r\) of the graph obtained by deleting from the Coxeter graph of \(W\) the edges with even labels. In the present paper, the author refines Brink's theorem by providing an explicit finite set of generators for the reflective part of the reflection centralizer and giving a method for computing its Coxeter diagram. The method is refined to the level that in many cases the required computations are very easy. Examples in the last section include the application of the method to the reflection centralizers in Bugaenko's and Vinberg's Coxeter groups.
