Remarks on hyperbolic polynomials

From MaRDI portal

The roots of symbols of hyperbolic partial differential equations are studied. As an example we state here one of several results proved in the paper. Let \(p(t,x,y)=t^ m+\sum^{m}_{j=1}a_ j(x,y)t^{m-j}\) be a polynomial in t with p(t,x,y)\(\neq 0\) if Im \(t\neq 0\), and with \[ | \partial_ x^{\alpha}a_ j(x,y)-\partial_ x^{\alpha}a_ j(x',y)| \leq C| x-x'|^{\delta}\;if\;| \alpha | =k. \] 0\(<\delta \leq 1\) is a suitable number. Then the roots \(\lambda_ 1(x,y),...,\lambda_ m(x,y)\) of the polynomial satisfy \[ | \lambda_ j(x,y)-\lambda_ j(x',y)| \leq C| x-x'|^ r, \] where \(r=\min (1,(k+\delta)/m)\), provided that x,x'\(\in U\subset \subset X\).
