Rotation Groups

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: A query, about the orbit PcalW in real 3-space of a point P under an isometry group calW generated by edge rotations of a tetrahedron, leads to contrasting notions, calW versus calS, of "rotation group". The set R =rsfA1,rsfA2 of rotations rsfAi about axes sfAi generates two manifestations of an isometry group on Re3: (1). In the {em stationary} group calS:=S(R), all axes {sf B} are fixed under a rotation rsfA about {sf A}. (2). In the {em peripatetic} group calW:=W(R), each rsfA transforms every rotational axis sfBot=A. {f Theorem.} If the line sfA1 is skew to sfA2, if each rsfAi is of infinite order, and if PinRe3, then both of the orbits PcalS and PcalW are dense in Re3.
