Tldr This paper embeds fully nonlinear thin-shell response in shape optimization loops operating directly on discrete triangulations without mid-surface parameterization. Shape derivatives are computed via algorithmic differentiation through full load continuation solves and used to optimize shapes for minimum strain energy with an 87% reduction in elastic strain under bending loads, matching COMSOL benchmarks.
