Tldr We present a matrix-free algorithm for compressing dense matrices into Hierarchically Semi-Separable form while simultaneously finding adaptive off-diagonal ranks below a prescribed tolerance, using O(k) matvecs per rank and O(N) arithmetic and storage when ranks are bounded, with inverse solved in O(N) time.
