Abstract: Given Omega bounded open set of mathbbRn and alphainmathbbR, let us consider [ mu(Omega,alpha)=min_{substack{vin W_{0}^{1,2}(Omega)\v

otequiv 0}} frac{displaystyleint_{Omega} |

abla v|^{2}dx+alpha left|displaystyleint_{Omega}|v|v,dx ight|}{displaystyleint_{Omega} |v|^{2}dx}. ] We study some properties of mu(Omega, alpha) and of its minimizers, and, depending on alpha, we determine the set Omegaalpha among those of fixed measure such that mu(Omegaalpha, alpha) is the smallest possible.

The paper under review is concerned with the problem of finding the optimal shape of a class of set-dependent functionals. The main result establishes an optimality property for a Rayleigh-type quotient on the Sobolev space \(W_0^{1,2}(\Omega)\), where \(\Omega\) is an open set in \({\mathbb R}^n\), \(n\geq 2\). A consequence of this result provides the best constant in the corresponding Sobolev-Poincaré inequality. The proofs combine the Schwarz symmetrization with spectral properties of the Dirichlet Laplace operator.
