Let \(k\) be a field and \(X = (X_{ij})\) a 4 by 4 matrix of indeterminates over \(k\). Let \(I_ 2\) denote the ideal, in \(k[X]\), generated by the 2 by 2 minors of \(X\). The author proves that products of two 2 by 2 minors do not form a Gröbner basis for the ideal \(I^ 2_ 2\) with respect to the lexicographical order with \(X_{11} < X_{12} < \cdots < X_{41} < X_{42} < X_{43} < X_{44}\). More generally, let \(X = (X_{ij})\) be a \(\mu\) by \(\nu\) matrix of indeterminates over \(k\) and let \(I_ t\) \((t \geq 1)\) denote the ideal, in \(k[X]\), generated by the \(t\) by \(t\) minors of \(X\). The author suggests a question about Gröbner bases of products \(I_{t_ 1} I_{t_ 2} \cdots I_{t_ r}\) for \(r \geq 1\) and \(t_ i \geq 1\).
