Let \(G_{\text{first}}\) denote the first example of a group of intermediate growth constructed by \textit{R. I. Grigorchuk} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 14, 41-43 (1980); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 14, No. 1, 53-54 (1980; Zbl 0595.20029)]. In this article the following main results are obtained. 1) There exists a continuum of groups that are commensurable up to finite kernels with \(G_{\text{first}}\) but not residually finite (Theorem 1). 2) Solvability of the word problem and the property of having torsion of unbounded order are not weakly geometric (Theorems 2, 3).
