The classification of maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups is based primarily on the result: If \(G\) is a simple algebraic group and \(\varphi:G\to\text{SL}(V)\) is a tensor indecomposable irreducible rational representation, then with a few specified exceptions the image of \(G\) is maximal among closed connected subgroups of one of the classical groups \(\text{SL}(V)\), \(\text{Sp}(V)\), or \(\text{SO}(V)\). From a slightly different point of view the problem is, for a given irreducible closed connected subgroup \(G\) of \(\text{SL}(V)\), to find all possible closed connected overgroups of \(G\) in \(\text{SL}(V)\). In this long paper the author presents some results in the absence of the connectedness requirement for \(G\).
