The author considers proper holomorphic self maps of a class of noncompact, pseudoconvex domains in \(\mathbb{C}^2\). For domains with compact, strictly pseudoconvex boundaries H. Alexander and then S. Pinchuk have shown that the only proper holomorphic self maps are automorphisms. E. Bedford and S. Bell extended these results to the case of pseudoconvex domains with real analytic boundaries. \textit{Y. Pan} proved similar statements for Reinhardt domains of finite type [see Math. Z. 208, No. 2, 289-296 (1991; Zbl 0739.32028)]. The present work deals with an extension of these results to a class of noncompact, pseudoconvex domains with real analytic boundaries. The main result is: Theorem 1. Suppose that \(P(z,\overline z)\) is a subharmonic polynomial without harmonic term. Let \(\Omega\) denote the domain in \(\mathbb{C}^2\) defined by: \[ \Omega = \bigl\{ (w,z) \in \mathbb{C}^2 : \text{Re} w + P(z, \overline z) < 0 \bigr\}. \] Every proper holomorphic map from \(\Omega\) to itself is an automorphism. The proof is patterned on that given by Y. Pan: Using the fact that \(\partial \Omega\) has finite type and that \(\Omega\) has a 1-parameter family of automorphisms the author analyzes the structure of the possible branch locus of such a mapping. The author also classifies the proper holomorphic mappings, satisfying certain additional hypotheses, between two domains of the type described in Theorem 1.
