    Let \( X\) be a normed linear space, \(D\) a nonempty, open connected subset of \(X \times X\),\(D_1 = \{ x : (x,y) \in D\) form some \( y\}\), \(D_2 =\{ y : (x,y) \in D\) for some \(x\}\) and \(D_+ = \{ x+y : (x,y) \in D \}\). Consider \( g: D_1 \to C\), \( h : D_2 \to C\), \( f: D_+ \to C\) such that the following multiplicative Pexider equation is satisfied: \[ f(x+y) = g(x)h(y) \quad \text{for all } (x,y) \in D. \] Then the author shows, with elegant arguments, that either \(f\equiv O\) on \(D_+ \) or there exist nonzero \( a,b \in C\) and \(\varphi : X \to C\) such that \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} &g(x) = a \varphi (x) &\quad& \text{for } x \in D_1, \\ &h(y) = b \varphi (y)&\quad& \text{for } y \in D_2, \\ &f(t) = ab\varphi (t) &\quad& \text{for } t \in D_+, \text{ and } \\ &0\neq \varphi (x+y) = \varphi (x) \varphi (y) &\quad&\text{for all } x,y \in X. \end{alignedat} \] A similar study for the additive Pexider equation was made by the author and \textit{F. Radó} in [Aequationes Math. 32, 227--239 (1987; Zbl 0625.39007)].
