Vector fields on non-compact manifolds

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We say that a vector field is bounded if its length and differential are bounded. Let M be a non-compact connected manifold with a cocompact and properly discontinuous action of an amenable group G having an element of infinite order. We establish a Poincar'{e}--Hopf theorem for a bounded vector field on M satisfying a certain mild condition. Our index of a vector field is defined to be an element of the module of coinvariants of bounded sequences on G, which is easily defined. As a consequence, such a vector field must have infinitely many zeros whenever the Euler characteristic of M/G is non-trivial.
