The Duistermaat-Heckman integration formula of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is generalized by means of a relation between physical and topological gauge-theories with non-abelian symmetries, explaining in this way the respective peculiar properties which characterized the involved functional integral also for infinite dimensional spaces. Accordingly are obtained general expressions for intersection pairings on moduli spaces of flat connections on a two-dimensional surface which agree for the gauge group \(SU(2)\) with formulas obtained by several methods. The DH formula \[ \int_ X \exp(-\beta H)/n! = \sum_ i \exp(- \beta H(P_ i))/ \beta^ n e(P_ i) \] is valid for an action on \(X\) (a \(2n\) dimensional compact symplectic manifold) with symplectic form \(\omega\) and for the group \(U(1)\) acting symplectically on \(X\), the action being generated by the vector field \(V\) so that \(dH = -V^ i\omega_ ij dx^ j,\) (\(e(P_ i) =\) products of the weights of the circle action at \(P_ i\)). In the non-abelian case is considered instead of \(U(1)\) a compact connected Lie group \(G\) with Lie algebra \(\mathcal G\), the Hamiltonian action being induced from a homomorphism \(\tilde \mu: {\mathcal G} \to \text{FUN}(X)\) (a space of smooth functions on \(X\), regarded as a Lie algebra via the Poisson bracket). The respective integral is \[ Z = \int_ M{\omega^ n\over n!}\exp[-{1\over 2}\beta(\mu,\mu)] \] \(\beta(\mu,\mu)\) being a quadratic form. The obtained formula is yield by means of a localization principle expressed in the paper for stationary phases in symplectic cases. The critical parts of functionals are also determined. The quantum field theory is the support of subsequent reformulations. Canonical quantization and topological field theory occur in the evaluation of a twisted partition function and a comparison is made with the localization formula for \(SU(2)\) and \(SO(3)\).
