In [\textit{J. Brzuchowski} et al., Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci., Sér. Sci. Math. 27, 447--448 (1979; Zbl 0433.28001)] one finds the following result: If \(\mathcal{I}\)~is a Borel-based \(\sigma\)-ideal in a separable metrizable space~\(X\) and \(\mathcal{A}\)~is a point-finite cover consisting of members of~\(\mathcal{I}\) then it has a subfamily~\(\mathcal{A}'\) whose union does not belong to the \(\sigma\)-algebra generated by~\(\mathcal{I}\) and the Borel sets. The authors prove a version of this result with the added assumptions that the quotient \(\text{Borel}(X)/\mathcal{I}\) is ccc and that no cardinal below \(2^{\aleph_0}\) is quasi-measurable; the stronger conclusion is that \(\mathcal{A}\)~has \(\aleph_1\)~many pairwise disjoint subfamilies each of which has an \(\mathcal{I}\)-Bernstein union (it and its complement meet every \(\mathcal{I}\)-positive Borel set).
