The authors consider functional differential equations of the form (*) \(x'=f(t,x_ t)\), \(t>0\), \(x(t)=\varphi(t)\), \(t\in(-\infty,0]\), where \(x_ t(0)=x(t+0)\), \(-\infty<\theta\leq 0\) and \(x\) takes values in a Banach space. They introduce the concept of the fundamental operator for the linear autonomous functional differential equations with infinite delay in a Banach space which may be regarded as generalization of the fundamental matrix. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the fundamental operator to be exponentially stable. The relationship between the exponential asymptotic stability of the zero solution of (*) and the exponential stability of the solution semigroup of the corresponding linear equation is established. It is found that the exponential stability problem for nonlinear equations of the form (*) can be discussed only in the exponentially fading memory phase spaces.
