Let \(A\) be an artinian ring. \(A\) is said to be of right local type in case every indecomposable right \(A\)-module has a simple top, and dually \(A\) is called of left colocal type in case every indecomposable left \(A\)-module has a simple socle. Rings of right local type and of left colocal type were studied by \textit{H. Tachikawa} [Math. Z. 71, 200--222 (1959; Zbl 0087.26502); 75, 215--227 (1961; Zbl 0104.03202)] and by \textit{T. Sumioka} [Osaka J. Math. 21, 629--648 (1984; Zbl 0546.16007); Math. J. Okayama Univ. 29, 127--146 (1987; Zbl 0649.16015)]. In the paper under review the author computes for a ring of right local type (1) all the Auslander-Reiten sequences including the indecomposable decomposition of the middle term, (2) full subquivers of the Auslander-Reiten quiver which give the whole of the Auslander-Reiten quiver by glueing together, and (3) all the meshes (including values) in the Auslander-Reiten quiver. As a corollary it is obtained that the Auslander-Reiten quiver of \(A\) is a well-valued translation quiver iff \(A\), in addition, is a ring of left colocal type. The author conjectures that if \(A\) is both of right local and left colocal type, then \(A\) has a selfduality. Finally, for a ring \(A\) defined by a bimodule \(M\) over division rings, necessary and sufficient conditions for \(A\) to be of right local type in terms of the dimension sequence of \(M\) are given.
