In this note the authors obtain firstly the sharp \(L_p\) estimate for the Fourier segment multiplier on the real line \(S\). Specifically, they prove that, for all \(1< p< \infty\), the best constant \(m_p\) in the inequality \(\|Sf\|_p\leq m_p\|f\|_p\) coincides with \(n_p\), the best one for the Hilbert operator that was obtained for all \(1< p< \infty\) by \textit{S. K. Pichorides} [Stud. Math. 44, 165-179 (1972; Zbl 0238.42007)]. On the way to prove this estimate the authors obtain some interesting results concerning one-parameter families of functions which lead to the \((p,p)\)-norm and subnorm of the Hilbert transform. The higher-dimensional version of the segment multiplier is also investigated. In this way, it is proved that the \((p,p)\)-norm of the \(n\)-dimensional box multiplier \(S_B\) is equal to \(n^n_p\). Following essentially the same approach used for the Fourier segment multiplier the authors study finally sharp \(L_p\) estimates for the ``gap Hilbert transform'' \(H_r\), \(r>0\), defined by \[ (H_rf)(x)= -i \int_{\mathbb{R}} (\chi_{(r,\infty)}(\xi)- \chi_{(-\infty, -r)}(\xi))\widehat f(\xi) e^{2\pi ix\xi} d\xi. \] It is obtained in this case that the best constant coincides again with \(n_p\).
