The article discusses the computation of consistent initial values for a class of differential algebraic equations of index 2 on the basis of the so-called tractability index. With the help of projectors an index reduction to an equivalent equation of index 1 is performed; this reduction allows the authors to determine consistent initial values. The algorithmic realisation of the theoretical results is discussed and the approach is applied to differential algebraic equations appearing in the simulation of electric circuits. Some numerical examples are given.
