The authors consider a nonlinear system describing the heat diffusion process inside a homogeneous material possibly leading to a phase transition. The system consists of a second-order integro-differential equation (derived from the balance of energy), a fourth-order parabolic inclusion (ruling the evolution of the order parameter) and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The authors prove an existence result for the above system using variational methods.
