This paper is concerned with elasto-piezoelectric three-dimensional composite layer of periodic structure obtained by repeating a certain unit cell. The layer is clamped in one side, and the voltage is applied only there. Based on a modified two-scale asymptotic homogenization technique, the authors derive the equations of balance and boundary conditions, as well as the constitutive relations, for the force resultants, moment resultants, and for the average electric field. A closed-form solution is presented for two-dimensional homogenized plates. It enables to give not only effective properties, but also local mechanical and electrical fields. As a numerical example, the authors deal with a symmetric laminate plate composed of three layers: an elastic layer is sandwiched between two piezoelectric layers. The dependence of the effective bending stiffness on the local piezoelectric constant of the material is investigated.
