Let \((S,\sigma)\) be a generalized metric space, that is S is a non-empty set and \(\sigma : S \times S \rightarrow [0,\infty)\), with \(\sigma(x,x) = 0\). A suitable notion of asymptotically equal generalized distances are given and some properties are studied. If \(\sigma\) is asymptotically equal to \(\rho\) and they introduce a topology, then the two topologies coincide. For a curve \(\gamma\) in \(S\), one can define the \(p\)-energy \(\epsilon_h(\sigma,p), h=\overline{1,3}\), of \(\gamma\) as in [\textit{G. De Cecco, G. Palmieri}, Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VII. Ser., B 10, No. 4, 815--842 (1996; Zbl 0885.53068)], which are three functionals generalizing the usual concept. Here it is proved that if the generalized distances \(\sigma\) and \(\rho\) are asymptotically equal, then \(\epsilon_h(\sigma,p)(\gamma) = \epsilon_h(\rho,p)(\gamma), p \geqslant 1, h=\overline{1,3}\), when \(\gamma\) has a finite energy for some \(p_0 >1\). The statement is true for every continuous curve \(\gamma\) if \((S,\sigma)\) is a topological space.
