This book summarizes research on scan statistics that arise naturally when analyzing the occurence of observed clusters of events in time and space. It gives broad and up-to-date coverage of exact results, approximations, and bounds for scan statistics. The contents of this book are subdivided into two parts. The first part is focused on the use of scan statistics in applications to the areas of epidemiology, quality control, reliability, molecular biology, astronomy, photographic science, telecommunications, mineral exploration, stress engineering, visual perception, sports statistics, military science, and meteorology. The second part presents the development of the theory and methods of scan statistics, both one- and twodimensional discrete and continuous scan statistics being discussed in great detail. This book is intended for researchers in applied probability and statistics as well as for scientists who use probability models and statistical inference in their research. It is also suitable for a graduate-level course in applied probability and statistics.
