The author presents a new proof to a recent result concerning simultaneous reduction to the canonical form of a pair of real matrices \((S,K)\), where \(S\) is symmetric and \(K\) is skew-symmetric. It is shown that this result can be used to formulate a quasidiagonalizability criterion for real matrices that is much simpler than the well-known Laffey's criterion.
