In the paper, an abstract averaging method is developed for the periodic problem \( \ddot u+\beta \dot u+Au+F(t,u)=0\), \(u(0)=u(T)\), \(\dot u(0)=\dot u(T), \) where \(A\) is a selfadjoint operator on a Hilbert space \(X\) and \(F\) is a nonlinearity with sublinear growth. The author proves effective conditions for the existence of a \(T\)-periodic mild solution to the problem considered. The general result is applied to a certain damped partial differential equations of hyperbolic type, for which the Landesman-Lazer type criterion is derived.
