The paper considers different kinds of preferences, which are not necessarily pre-order relations. The authors study the class of preferences that are defined by means of the so-called strongly star-shaped conic sets in a Banach space. They suggest a certain class of functions that provide a scalarization of relations based on the preferences introduced. Properties of functions from this class are presented and some examples are provided. Using such class of functions the authors construct scalar optimization problems such that weakly minimal points, minimal points and properly minimal points can be described as solutions of these problems. Duality for these scalar optimization problems is considered as a certain scalar duality for the initial problem of vector optimization.
