In this monograph, we aim at providing the reader with a self-contained study of the mathematical modelling in mechanics. Much attention is given to modelling of typical constructions applied in many different areas. Plates and shallow shells which are widely used in the aerospace industry provide good examples, together with optimization problems to find the constructions which are of maximal strength (endurance) and satisfy some other requirements, e.g. weight limitations. The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 covers basic facts on functional spaces, variational inequalities, and measure theory used in the next chapters. Chapter 2 is devoted to contact problems in elasticity, in particular to qualitative properties of solutions such as regularity, and to constructions of measures describing interaction forces in contact area. Elastoplastic models are treated in chapter 3 with a detailed presentation of existence results for static, quasi-static, and dynamic problems. Optimization and optimal control problems are investigated in chapter 4. Existence results are proved for selected shape optimization and optimal control problems. In chapter 5 we present the sensitivity analysis to some models investigated in this book. For example, we prove the conical differentiability of solutions to the fourth-order elliptic variational inequalities. Finally, we discuss optimality conditions for some shape optimization and optimal design problems.
