The authors study the flow \(u_t = J\tau\) for mappings \(u\) of Riemannian manifolds in an almost complex manifold with an almost complex structure \(J\). Here \(\tau\) is the tension field. It is called the Schrödinger flow. For mappings of a circle into a compact Kähler manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature or a complex hyperbolic space they prove that the Cauchy problem with smooth initial data admits a unique global smooth solution. For mappings of a closed Riemann surface into a compact Kähler manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature the authors prove that the Cauchy problem with smooth initial data admits a unique local smooth solution.
