The following result is proved: Let M be a connected real hypersurface of the quaternionic projective space \({\mathbb{H}}P^ n\) (n\(\geq 2)\) of constant quaternionic sectional curvature 4, and let R denote the Riemannian curvature tensor of M and S the Ricci tensor of M. Assume that M satisfies the following two hypotheses: (1) Locally there exists a canonical basis \(J_ 1\), \(J_ 2\), \(J_ 3\) of the quaternionic Kähler structure of \({\mathbb{H}}P^ n\) such that for a local unit normal vector field \(\xi\) of M the vectors \(J_ i\xi\) \((i=1,2,3)\) are principal curvature vectors of M everywhere, \((2)\quad R(X,Y)SZ+R(Y,Z)SX+R(Z,X)SY=0\) for all vector fields X, Y, Z on M. Then M is an open part of a geodesic hypersphere of radius r in \({\mathbb{H}}P^ n\), where \(0<r<\pi /2\) and \(\cot^ 2(r)=1/(2n)\).
