The authors establish certain weighted inequalities for Hardy-type operators of the form \[ (T_{u,b}g)(t)= \sup_{t\leq\tau<\infty}\, {u(\tau)\over B(\tau)} \int^\tau_0 g(s) b(s)\,ds, \] where \(u\) and \(b\) are two weight functions on \((0,\infty)\), with \(b\) such that \(P(t)= \int^t_0 b(s)\,ds\) satisfies \(0< B(t)<\infty\) on \((0,\infty)\). Namely, it is shown that there exists a positive \(C\) such that \[ \Biggl(\int^\infty_0 [(T_{u,b}g)(t)]^q w(t)\,dt\Biggr)^{1/q}\leq C\Biggl(\int^\infty_0 [g(t)]^p v(t)\,dt\Biggr)^{1/p} \] holds for every measurable nonnegative function \(g\) on \((0,\infty)\), the numbers \(p\) and \(q\) being subject to some restrictions. Moreover, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the weight functions \(v\) and \(w\), such that the constant \(C\) exists. Related inequalities are also derived by imposing particular properties to the function \(g\) (like being nonincreasing). This paper considerably improves results obtained by many authors.
